01 / OVERVIEW

Concrete yards, compounds and hardstanding

Our concrete work is for commercial sites. We lay concrete yards for businesses and industrial units, compounds for storing vehicles, plant and materials, and hardstanding bases for buildings, containers and equipment.

Concrete is a solid, low maintenance surface that copes well with heavy loads. That is why it is a common choice for areas that take vans, lorries, forklifts and machinery day after day, where a softer surface would rut or break up.

02 / COMMERCIAL CONCRETE

Sub-base, reinforcement and joints

A concrete yard is only as strong as what is underneath it. We excavate and compact a proper sub-base before pouring, so the slab has something solid to sit on rather than cracking under weight or movement in the ground.

Where a yard or compound will take regular vehicle traffic, we reinforce the concrete with steel mesh to help it resist cracking. We also build in joints at the right intervals, which let the slab move slightly with temperature changes rather than cracking across the surface.

  • Reinforcement mesh where the slab will take vehicles
  • Joints positioned to control movement
  • A level, properly finished surface

Planned around how the site is used

Before we quote, we look at what will run on the surface, from cars and vans to lorries and plant, and plan the base and slab to suit. We also set falls across the slab so surface water runs off to drainage rather than sitting on the yard.

Where a new yard or compound needs drainage or a sewer connection, we can carry that out as part of the same job through our civil works and drainage service.

How long concrete takes to cure

Concrete needs time to cure before it is ready for normal use. As a general guide, you can usually walk on new concrete after a day or two, but vehicles should stay off it for around 7 days. Full strength takes around 28 days.

We'll agree with you when each area can go back into use, so you can plan deliveries and parking around the work.

FAQS

Frequently asked questions

01

How long before vehicles can use a new concrete yard?

As a general guide, people can usually walk on it after a day or two, but vehicles should stay off for around 7 days while the concrete gains strength. Full strength takes about 28 days. We'll confirm the timing for your site when the job is finished.

02

Does a concrete yard need reinforcement mesh?

Where a yard or compound will take regular vehicle weight, we reinforce the concrete with steel mesh to help it resist cracking over time. We'll advise on this once we've seen the site and know what will use it.

03

Why does concrete need joints?

Concrete expands and contracts slightly with temperature changes. Joints give it somewhere to move without cracking across the surface. We position them at suitable intervals as part of the layout of the slab.

04

Can you sort out drainage for a new yard or compound?

Yes. Standard concrete is impermeable, so surface water needs somewhere to go. We set falls across the slab and can install the drainage as part of our civil works service. We'll talk through the options when we quote.

05

Where do you lay commercial concrete?
