01 / OVERVIEW

Asphalt and tarmac: what's the difference

In everyday conversation, "tarmac" and "asphalt" often get used for the same thing. Strictly speaking, asphalt is stone aggregate bound with bitumen, and it's the material most roads, car parks and heavy-use surfaces in the UK are actually built from. Tarmac, or tarmacadam, is an older term for a similar surface and the word most people still use for driveways.

What matters in practice is choosing the right mix and depth for how the surface will be used. A driveway taking a couple of cars needs less than a car park taking dozens of vehicles, or an access road taking regular lorry traffic, so we specify accordingly.

02 / ASPHALT SURFACING

Where asphalt is the right choice

Asphalt surfacing suits sites with heavier or more frequent traffic: commercial car parks, industrial yards, access roads on new developments, and areas used by delivery vehicles or plant. The denser asphalt mixes used on these sites resist rutting and wear under sustained loading.

We work for businesses, developers and local authorities as well as homeowners, so the asphalt we lay on a yard or estate road is specified differently to a home driveway.

Hot rolled asphalt and SMA

Hot rolled asphalt is a dense, well-proven surfacing material widely used on roads and heavily trafficked areas in the UK. It's laid hot, compacted with rollers, and often finished with chippings rolled into the surface for skid resistance.

Stone mastic asphalt, or SMA, uses more coarse stone bound with a rich bitumen content, giving a surface that holds up under heavy, repeated loading, such as bus routes and haul roads. We specify the right material for the traffic the surface will actually see.

Durability and what affects it

A well-specified, well-laid asphalt surface on a properly prepared base holds up for a long time under normal use. How long it lasts depends on the sub-base, traffic volume and weight, drainage, and how well the surface is maintained.

We prepare the ground, build the base to suit the expected loading, and lay and compact the asphalt to that specification, so the surface does the job it's needed for, not just looks right on day one.

FAQS

Frequently asked questions

01

What's the difference between asphalt and tarmac?

Asphalt is stone aggregate bound with bitumen and is what most roads and heavy-use surfaces are actually made from. Tarmac, or tarmacadam, is an older term often used for similar surfaces on driveways. The terms are often used interchangeably, but the mix used differs by application.

02

Is asphalt suitable for a driveway?

Asphalt mixes are typically specified for heavier traffic than a standard driveway needs, such as car parks or access roads. For most home driveways we'd use a tarmac mix suited to car traffic, but we can discuss the right material once we know how it will be used.

03

How long does asphalt surfacing last?

A properly specified and laid asphalt surface, on a sound base with good drainage, can last many years under normal use. Lifespan depends on traffic volume and weight, ground conditions, and ongoing maintenance, so we specify the base and mix to suit the expected use.

04

What is stone mastic asphalt used for?

Stone mastic asphalt, or SMA, is used where a surface takes heavy, repeated loading, such as bus routes and haul roads. It uses more coarse stone and a richer bitumen content than standard asphalt, giving better resistance to rutting under sustained traffic.

05

Do you supply asphalt as well as lay it?
